This mine finds it's origins in the efforts of two prospectors in 1898. Grubstacked by a gentleman from Medford, Oregon. The prospectors entered the Oregon Mountain Country on a prospecting exploration. They crossed into Del Norte County, California, on Falls Creek (a tributary of Shelly Creek). They established a camp and started sinking the shaft. They followed the ore body down. The ore dipped from the vertical at 18 degrees, so the original shaft is referenced to as the incline shaft.
As the original prospectors reached the 30 foot level, seeing great potential, another gentleman from Oregon leased the property and expanded the operation by construction of facilities and expanding the staffing on the property.
There is extensive documentation showing this mine had origins in the late 1800s and early 1900's. Earlier, an entire community was built around the mine. The mine had a two hundred foot 3 compartment shaft. Eventually, the mine closed due to poor management, but, the historical notes show the Monumental Mine to be a very rich mine.
In the 1940's there was some minor activity at the site and in the 1980's a new owner pursued exploration at the mine. In the 1980s, there were a series of core samplings done showing the Monumental propery to be a high-quality gold prospect with potential concentrations of economic gold mineralization.
